I’m addressing what a study is to clearly define the type of daily sketches I’m posting are all about and why.
In art, a study is a drawing, sketch or painting done in preparation for a finished piece, or as visual notes. My Studies are often used to understand problems involved in rendering subjects and a way for me to plan the elements i’ll use in a finished piece of work, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.
In the context of painting, fine art or even illustration, a “study” is the term used for a practice piece, a quick painting or illustration done to capture the essence of a subject or scene. A painting or illustration done to try out a composition, rather than a painting done as a final piece.
A study is more refined or finished than a sketch, but not as finished as a fine art painting or a refined illustration.
My Studies usually include either the entire composition (everything that will be in the final painting) or just the marine life. The reason most of my studies focus on the actual marine life. Marine life is hard to get right, they need to be anatomically correct, scale patterns are exact, fin proportions, muscle tones and then finally movement all has to be taken in account, so I don’t want to get frustrated on a fine art piece or illustration until I get the specific species worked to satisfaction.
